Overview :
----------
Along with this INSTALL.DOC for a quick start guide you should also read
SETUP.DOC. MBPRO.DOC or your manual has information on all features
and concepts. INTRO.DOC will give you an overview of our product.
If you take the time to read this INSTALL.DOC thoroughly, it will guide you
through the steps needed to demo the Modem Base Pro product and/or actually
put a database on-line. Our COMPOSER product contains on-screen instructions
that will hand hold you through setting up a database for actual on-line use
and at the same time give you an idea of the concepts relative to Modem Base
Pro. MBMANAGE is a database utility that can be used to create or manage
databases and finally MBACCESS is the actual online program that interfaces
your caller to your databases. A logical test drive of Modem Base Pro
requires you to first run the MBPRO demo, then run COMPOSER and either put
our example MBPRO.DBF online or any new or existing database may also be
used.
1) UNZIP the contents of MBPRO160.ZIP or run MBPRO160.EXE
--------------------------------------------------------
If you have already uncompressed MBPRO160 into it's own directory then you
can move on to step 2, otherwise you will need to follow the steps below.
Depending on how you originally received Modem Base Pro Test Drive, it
may either be in a .ZIP file or an .EXE file. It is even possible that
during distribution the online service you downloaded MBPRO from changed
it to some other compression file. At any rate, the .EXE file is the
easiest method, because it is called a self-extracting file. We recommend
you create a directory where you want your MBPRO to go. Typically, C:\MBPRO.
You can do this by changing to your C: drive first, by typing :
C: [ENTER]
Notice the "[ENTER]" in brackets requires that you hit the ENTER or RETURN
key on your keyboard. Next make sure you are in the ROOT directory of C:
by typing :
CD \ [ENTER]
Now you can make the directory where you want to uncompress the contents of
the MBPRO160.EXE file. Type :
MD MBPRO [ENTER]
Now you need to change to the newly created directory by typing :
CD \MBPRO [ENTER]
Now that the current DOS DIRECTORY is C:\MBPRO we will want to SELF-EXTRACT
the contents of the MBPRO160 file. If you have the MBPRO160.EXE file, simply
run the file by supplying the full path of where the file is located and the
filename. For example :
C:\DOWNLOAD\MBPRO160 [ENTER]
This will self-extract the contents of the MBPRO160.EXE that was in the
C:\DOWNLOAD directory into the current DOS DIRECTORY which is the C:\MBPRO
directory. Now MBPRO160.EXE is installed.
If your file you received is in .ZIP format or other compression format, you
need to use the uncompression utility for the format being used. For example :
PKUNZIP C:\DOWNLOAD\MBPRO160.ZIP [ENTER]
This will UNZIP the contents of the MBPRO160.ZIP file into our current DOS
DIRECTORY C:\MBPRO. We have assumed that PKUNZIP is in our DOS PATH. If it
is not you will also need to supply the full path of the PKUNZIP file :
C:\UTILS\PKUNZIP C:\DOWNLOAD\MBPROT160 [ENTER]
If you received your file in another compression format other than
a self-extracting .EXE file or .ZIP file you will need the uncompression
utility for that format. You should be able to contact the service in
which you received the file from for the uncompression file you need and
follow the instructions that come with that uncompression utility. You can
also download the latest available test drive MBPRO160.EXE or later direct
from us at ECTECH BBS 909-780-5672.
2) Modem Base Pro SETUP. First RUN the DEMO by typing MBPRO.
--------------------------------------------------------------
Once Modem Base Pro is installed into it's own directory you are ready to
test drive MBPRO. Depending on how quick you want to get started and what
you want to do, there is a few different things you can do. We recommend
that you first go to your installed Modem Base Pro directory, i.e.; C:\MBPRO
or whichever directory you installed it to and first run the Modem Base Pro
Local Demo. You can do this easily by typing MBPRO and press [ENTER] after
changing to the installed MBPRO directory. We encourage you to [A]dd a
records to the various on-line databases first and read the on-screen
information. This will give you an idea about some of the features that Modem
Base Pro has to offer. Once you finish [A]dding a record to the database then
from the MBPRO menu choose [B]rowse to browse existing records online that are
in the database. You should see some example records and your record will be
displayed as the last record entered. There is online [H]elp from the command
prompt for each of the commands available. All commands are also documented
in the MBPRO.DOC file. This will give you an idea of how Modem Base Pro
works in an online environment once you run the demo MBPRO. Next, if you
want to actually put a database online for live testing, you may do so, by
using COMPOSER in step 3 below.
3) Modem Base Pro Composer Setup (for existing databases only)
---------------------------------------------------------------
A) Once step 2 is complete and MBPRO has been installed, you may setup an
existing database for on-line usage by typing COMPOSER. If you do not
have an existing database you may use the MBPRO.DBF database in the DEMO\MBPRO
directory below your installed MBPRO directory or you may create a new
database using any dBase III compatible database program or using our
MBMANAGE utility. If you want to quickly see how to put a database online
we recommend using the example MBPRO.DBF file in the DEMO directory.
COMPOSER contains ON-SCREEN instructions and will ask the following :
1) Database Filename. Your database filename MUST BE 6 characters
or less. You will need to enter your database filename WITHOUT the
filename extension or path, i.e. if your database is PARTS.DBF, you
will only enter PARTS as your database filename. COMPOSER will
use this filename to create the necessary CONTROL and SUPPORT files.
If you are using the example MBPRO.DBF database type MBPRO.
2) Database Directory. You will then be asked for the location of
your database. Enter the directory it is located in, i.e., C:\DATA.
If COMPOSER can not find your database file, it will ask you to TRY
AGAIN. You may try again or press CTRL-C to abort the operation at
any time. If you are using the example MBPRO.DBF database, it is
located in a subdirectory called DEMO in your MBPRO installed
directory. For example, you will put : C:\MBPRO\DEMO for a typical
installation.
3) Installation Directory. This directory should be a seperate
directory from that of your MBPRO directory and will be where
COMPOSER sets up your database for on-line usage. Your database
file will be copied to this directory if it is different from the
database directory. Caution! If your database is very large this
may not be desired, and you should use the same directory as your
database if possible. COMPOSER will attempt to create the
directory to install to if it does not exist and if it can not create
the directory, it will ask you to try again. We recommend possibly
using a subdirectory beneath your MBPRO directory. A typical
installation might use C:\MBPRO\DATA1 as an input here.
B) Once your database is installed by COMPOSER, you will proceed to setup
your NODE CONFIGURATION and LINK CONFIGURATION. There is ON-SCREEN
instructions for this process and you should refer to your manual for
database design and configuration concepts. Once your configuration and
link databases are setup properly, an example DOOR.BAT is created and your
database is ready to go on-line. You may then go back into your
CONFIGURATION or LINK setup at any time by typing the <filename>C and
<filename>L batch files created for you. Use MBCHOICE to create any needed
CHOICE databases. We recommend that you NOW READ the SETUP.DOC file for
setup highlights information.
4) Modem Base Pro Manage (MBMANAGE)
-------------------------------------
We recommend that you put MBMANAGE.EXE somewhere in your path. You can
do this one of two ways. Either add the MBPRO directory to your path
which is usually defined in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file or you can type SET
and press [ENTER] at the DOS PROMPT and look for a statement in your
environment that says PATH= and you can copy MBMANAGE.EXE to one of the
directories that may already be in your path, like C:\DOS. By putting
MBMANAGE.EXE in your path, you will be able to execute this program
from any directory and it makes things easy when managing your databases.
Modem Base Pro Manage is a Database Management Utility (DBMS) that can be
used to create new databases in dBase(tm) III compatible format. You may
also use MBMANAGE to add, edit, browse, or search your existing databases.
See the manual under Section II for more information on using MBMANAGE.
Quick Start :
MBMANAGE requires you to pass the database filename to load or create via
the command line :
MBMANAGE NEW.DBF
This will try to read in the database called NEW.DBF in the current directory.
If it is not found you will be prompted if you want to create a new database
called NEW.DBF and will be given an option to [Q]uit.
IMPORTANT NOTE : MBMANAGE is a program that requires that ANSI.SYS be loaded
in your system. If you load MBMANAGE and receive what looks like garbage on
your screen with no color, the garbage is ANSI codes that your computer is not
converting. To fix this problem you will need to simply load ANSI.SYS in you
CONFIG.SYS file and restart your computer. You can do this by editing your
CONFIG.SYS file and typically adding a line DEVICE=C:\DOS\ANSI.SYS. The online
database MBACCESS does not require ANSI.SYS to be loaded and has a built in
ANSI emulator. A future version of MBMANAGE is being developed that will not
require the need for ANSI.SYS to be loaded.
